Two thirds of foreign investment are found in Greater Lisbon and the North

Foreign investment in Portugal totalled 180 billion euros, with Greater Lisbon and the Northern region accounting for 72% of this total, according to data from the Bank of Portugal. Lisbon contributed 55.2% of this figure, followed by the North with 16.2%. Between 2017 and 2023, most regions saw an increase in foreign investment, with Lisbon and the Algarve standing out.

Despite regional variations, foreign direct investment in Portugal reached 6.8 billion euros in 2023, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. Bank of Portugal emphasises that the stock of foreign investment more than doubled between the end of 2008 and the end of 2023.
