The Decree-Law no. 85-B/2025, in force since 2 July 2025, extends the validity of residence permits and documents related to foreign citizens residing in Portugal until 15 October 2025.
The following also remain valid:
- Documents and visas for pending applications with AIMA or the former SEF
- Documents and visas that expired after 15 March 2020, under exceptional pandemic measures
These documents allow:
- Stay in national territory
- Access to public services (healthcare, education, social security)
- Employment contracts
- Travel within the Schengen Area, where applicable
As from 15 October 2025, residence permit documents will only be accepted if the holder presents proof of renewal request issued by AIMA, valid for 180 days from the date of issuance.
