Portugal Emerges as a European Growth Leader Driven by Technology and Innovation

Portugal is strengthening its position as one of Europe’s most dynamic economies, supported not only by tourism and domestic consumption but also by a rapidly expanding technology and innovation sector. According to an analysis published by the French newspaper Le Figaro, the country has successfully established itself as a European technology hub, attracting international talent, investment and high-growth companies.

In the second quarter of the year, Portugal’s economy grew by 0.8% compared to the previous quarter and by 2.5% year-on-year, making it one of the strongest performers in the Eurozone. This momentum has been accompanied by improved public finances and a significant reduction in public debt levels.

Among the factors highlighted for this performance are the country’s high quality of life, skilled workforce, innovation-friendly policies and increasingly competitive business ecosystem. Lisbon has played a central role in this transformation, particularly through the Unicorn Factory Lisboa, an initiative launched in 2022 to support high-potential technology companies. According to figures cited by Le Figaro, the project has already attracted 17 international startups valued at more than €1 billion each.

The French publication notes that Portugal is no longer viewed solely as a tourism destination but is increasingly recognised as a key player in Europe’s digital economy. Modern infrastructure, research and development incentives, favourable conditions for highly qualified professionals and strong international connectivity have helped position the country as an attractive destination for investment and innovation.

The report also points to Portugal’s growing relevance in data centre infrastructure and digital connectivity projects. Leveraging its strategic Atlantic location, international submarine cable connections and expanding renewable energy capacity, the country is attracting major investments that support the digital and artificial intelligence economy.

Together, these developments are reinforcing Portugal’s reputation as one of Europe’s most compelling recent economic success stories, combining stability, innovation and a strong ability to attract global talent and capital.
